We’re not “sit back and nod” therapists. We are genuinely engaged with people. We want to understand why something is happening, but you also we want to help the person actually do something about it.
What it probably feels like to be our client
“They actually get me.”
We are naturally curious and willing to meet people where they are rather than forcing them into a particular mold. Our interest in ADHD, autism, LGBTQ+ clients, couples, families, and gender exploration suggests we are comfortable with complexity and with people who may not fit neatly into a box.“I can be myself here.”
We have a pretty low tolerance for judgment and a high tolerance for people being messy, complicated, funny, angry, confused, or unconventional. We suspect clients don't have to spend much energy trying to present the "acceptable" version of themselves.“They’re going to call me on my bull-—but I'm going to know they’re doing it because they care.”
This is probably one of our strengths. We don’t equate being supportive with agreeing with everything a client says. We are more like someone who can validate the feeling while still challenging the thinking or behavior.“Therapy doesn't have to be miserable.”
We have a sense of humor. That's important. There are moments where we can make a client laugh about something that previously felt overwhelmingly heavy—without minimizing the underlying issue.“We see the whole person.”
Our clinical interests span children, adults, families, neurodivergence, relationships, identity, grief, etc. We think contextually rather than reducing someone to a diagnosis or presenting problem. We're very invested.
We care deeply about whether we're doing things well—for our clients, our clinicians, and our practice.
We are warm, direct, irreverent, fiercely accepting, practical, and willing to tell someone the truth without making them feel like they're a problem for needing help.
No client should feel like they have to perform.
